Party or chaos?

Full Moon Party Another warning to all those who insist on getting wasted on the full moon. If you are not already aware...a full moon is a sacred day for buddhists. Buddha was born on a full moon, obtained enlightenment and passed on to nirvanna during a full moon.

To take drugs, get drunk and dance around like lunatics is the same as insulting the buddha and all buddhists around the globe. Its such a huge commercial endeavour that Thais embrace the party because they can make MONEY off the foreigners.

A party is a party any time of the year. Having a 'good time' is not bad or to be accompanied by guilt but, why do people insist on behaving like this on a sacred day. One day before the full moon or after or any other day, but why do people insist on buddha day? Karma forces DO take place at every moment and recent events can attest to this as being fact. Too many reports of people getting, hurt, killed, robbed and generally chaos taking place.

This is a petion to all those out there to respect Thai culture and tradition. Party the night before the full moon and visiting a buddhist temple on the full moon and taking a nice herbal sauna to rid yourself of the toxins from self indulgence is the best advice i could give anyone. Perhaps this behavior would insure you do not get in a motorcycle accident, boat accident, getting robbed, shot or getting into an argument or fight

But i am sure this message will not be accepted positively because no one likes to be told what to do or how to live there life and take it upon themselves in slapping the buddha in the face Just please...think about it.

A VERY good point Pete! I love the full moon party as much as every other lunatic (excuse the pun), but it does seem extremely disrespectful to hold it on a sacred day for 95% of the Thai population. I did think that the party was often moved to the day before or after on some occasions though. It really wouldn't hurt anyone to move the party by a day!

Happy Partying!!!

I know 2 places in the world with perfect beaches, good climate hot, good full moon partys, beautiful people...perfect places...the secret to evitate this panorama (like in the photo) is to say just to just persons and to don´t do a website. I´m very sad for the future of koh phangan I think we can be happy and do partys and take some drugs but with a little of concience and to be constantly in contact with the nature. The guy of the photo and his friends I think they are poor PENDEJOS!! I never say to them my secrets places...

I know this was almost a year ago, but this made me cringe.
"Slapping Buddha in the face"? I didn't know theologists occasionally found long term refuge on Phangnan. Who the hell do you think you are? Like all those who've been very few places before you land in some paradise in SE Asia for an extended ammount of time, you think you can tell people how to behave because YOU understand the culture. Let me tell you; you don't know shit. unless you speak Thai or study their culture or lived there for years and years, you're barely scratching the surface. The Thai friends you have, they don't understand where you coming a lot of the time. You get along because they're always nice. They're nice because they think of you as a guest and a person apart from them. They know you're completly different and that you're culture is different. Have you ever considered for a second that Buddhists and Buddha don't give a shit what you do and, like the other guy said, they could move the party a day before or after the real full moon? I think you're right about telling people to be culturally aware, but don't make allussions of regularly party goers slapping a god in the face as if you and the holy one meet once a week for tea and fucking crumpets. Why don't you talk about the pollution on Haadrin and how THAT is a slap on the face to nature and the locals. you think buddhist give a shit if you drink on a holy day that's not yours to celebrate? If you live there, why don't you organize people after full moon to pick up the trash on the beach instead of valorizing yourself by subtlely communicating that you know just a little more about Thai culture than your average british go-get-pissed-for-2weeks tit. And by the way, I've met someone way before he plungged to his death off a cliff on Phangan; Friends said it was all a combinations of bucketts, shrooms, a scooter and a cliff. I think that the spiritual force that embodies Buddha has better things to do than to curse poor drunk bastards on shitty motorbikes. Despite the fact that I think you suck, I whish you good karma and a good life.
