Facts & Stories

Hello there and welcome back to Koh Phangan Island News – the one and only independent newspaper reporting the awful truth about Koh Phangan Paradise Island.

Two weeks ago we celebrated another infamous Full Moon Party at world famous Hadrin beach and in the aftermath we had quite some amazing gossip about the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) showing up on Koh Phangan Island and furthermore non-confirmed rumors about some arrests of local police cops which were involved doing some nasty drug trade business on the Island of Madness, formerly also known as Koh Phangan Paradise Island.

So this article can be seen as pure, 100%, Koh Phangan Island gossip as you probably will never find any official documents in some police department. But this funny and hilarious story was brought to us by various reliable island sources and therefore deserves being posted and published on Koh Phangan Island News.

Apparently, during the last Full Moon Party period in February 2009, the local Royal Thai Police from Koh Phangan arrested a taxi car driver, who was in possession of a few YaBa Pills, locally known as ‘crazy medicine’ containing a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine.

Koh Phangan Paradise - The Return of the Shiva Moon Knights!

Read more   Posted by: Becki on Monday, September 11, 2006 - 07:28 AM
Facts & Stories Welcome back to the third part of our Koh Phangan Shiva Moon Series. The first part of this series, Koh Phangan Shiva Moon Experience, can be found here. And the second part, The Shiva Moon Empire Strikes Back, can be found here. Enjoy!

Hen Khae Tua ... what does this actually mean? A word by word translation means "Seeing as far as body"! Meaning they only see as far as their own body ... they don't care about anything except themselves ... they don't care about their neighbors ... they don't care about the nature ... they simply don't care about anything except their own interests! We call it selfish "egoists" in Thai language it's called "Hen Khae Tua"!

And again ... it's not ALL of them ! I don't want to generalize things here about any race as there are still some really nice local Thais here on beloved Koh Phangan Island but like I said earlier it gets more and more hard to find these ancient humans!

So ... back to the locals from Baan Tai / Baan Nuea village and the Shiva Moon Empire. Efforts have been made and a village chief messenger has been sent over resulting in no change or whatsoever! The Shiva Moon Party is still running as the money flows and most people here in our village are mostly just pissed off with the Shiva Moon situation!

Facts & Stories Welcome back to the second part of our Koh Phangan Shiva Moon series. The first part of this series, Koh Phangan Shiva Moon Experience, can be found here. Enjoy!

Well ... I think you've also watched these movies like Return of the Yeti Knights, The Empire Strikes Back or Rocky I,II,III,IV and V or The Evil Never Ends Part XXIII?

Anyway ... since this years high season in 2006 again on the island menu The Shiva Moon Empire Strikes Back!

Well ... so what's that Shiva Moon Empire actually? Originally it's a butcher family specialized in killing pigs and then offering those nice pieces of fresh meet on the local Baan Tai market. Their Shiva Moon Headquarters are located next to the local Baan Tai fresh market just after that tiny bridge on the left hand side.

Koh Phangan Paradise Island - The Shiva Moon Experience!

Facts & Stories Greetings from the Koh Pha-Ngan Island News Headquarters, deeply hidden in some tropical rainforests just next to that bloody Shiva Moon Party thing.

Well ... the world famous Shiva Moon Party! It first came into life a couple of years ago when most locals here on the island of madness finally realized that organizing so called techno parties could provide them with an easy and constant source of income.

The principle is quite easy: get some speakers and a well known local DJ with the wicked name of Psyfrog or perhaps Freakulizer or something simpler like Sabai Sabai? Then get tons of fluorescent colors and throw it at any coconut tree surrounding the area as most tourists with a couple of Chang beers and a few Saeng Som buckets will find this amazing mix of bright colors in the middle of the night the most psychedelic experience they have ever experienced!

Electric In the North of the Island

Read more   Posted by: marswalker on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 - 04:59 PM
Facts & Stories Rumor has it that the main power lines in the north part of the island are to be replaced after only six years in service.

It seems that the massive increase in aircon units and housing, resort boom have meant that the supply lines are becoming over loaded and causing the system to trip out. Funny i always thought when the power failed it was another farang rapped round a power pole, seems i was wrong.

As yet there is no date for the project to start, but the word is that in the spring additional lines will be slung on the existing poles to ease the problem.

Free Boat

Read more   Posted by: Cheree on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 - 01:51 PM
Facts & Stories Well not exactly free, but as about as close as you can get. Buy this seaworthy longtail boat built here on the island, have fun, explore the islands and nearby marine park, camp on deserted beaches, fish, dive, cruise, even sleep on this little beauty, and when you’re done with her, sell her for what you paid for her and be on your way ! That’s having your cake (fun) and eating it too !!

This boat is built of “Mai Dtakien”, sure it’s expensive, but it’s the best boat building timber you can get. Not available on the island, this timber was specially ordered and shipped over from the mainland. This boat will last a lifetime. She has a 5.5 meter keel and is 7 meters overall length. Unlike most island longtail boats she is designed with an upright prow like the big fishing boats that really cuts through the waves, rather than slapping into them.

The power plant is an ultra reliable petrol burning Honda 20 H.P. V-twin 4 stroke that is just one year old. Most boats this size use an 8 or 11 H.P. motor so you’ve got plenty of power to spare. It’s coupled to a Daihatsu gearbox, built by “Sowit” the best engineer on the mainland, giving forward and reverse gear. This is the only boat on the island with a gearbox. Standard Thai longtails have a dual chain with sprocket setup that slings oil, needs constant adjustment, and they are really more trouble than they are worth, although they are very cheap and this is why the Thais use them. Again the gearbox is more expensive, but well worth it for reliability and no hassles in the long run. Reverse gear is really handy for backing away from that hidden coral head when you need it too !

How Koh Phangan Police solve murder!

Read more   Posted by: uncovered on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 11:35 PM
Facts & Stories Two to three weeks ago there was a shooting taking place in Sritanu village. One drunken guy lost his mind and shot another one in a restaurant near the market.

Fortunately the police was able to catch the murder, but as often happened before; it did not come to a court hearing. Instead the people involved agreed to compensation. The family of the young boy killed got half a million baht. 150'000 baht of that amount went to the Phangan police for negotiating with the involved parties. At least the family who lost their son can now buy their long awaited car. Such blood money can be quite useful I guess. Imaging if one of your closed one get murdered you could finally buy what ever you had in your dreams. Just make sure that you don’t let them get away too cheap. And do not forget if a farang get murdered you may not get any money, you have to be careful that you don’t have to pay to the murder instead.

However a cheap funeral on this island cost around 8'000 baht or if you do not want to spent that much money you can just throw the body into the sea (the fish and crabs do the rest for you).

Keep in mind that we are in the amazing Thailand, and everything is possible (like wonderland)

Strange Sand Transports from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui at dawn?

Read more   Posted by: Becki on Saturday, October 09, 2004 - 09:53 PM
Facts & Stories As our uncensored and uncorrupted team of reporters from Koh Phangan Island News is never sleeping and always on the hunt for newest gossip on this island we provide you with the latest news about this lovely island called Ko Panghan.

Sand … well … What is so interesting about sand? What is sooo interesting about normal average sand that makes us have some strange thoughts when observing strange activities? A couple of days ago at dawn one of our never sleeping reporters witnessed 10 trucks fully loaded with sand at the ferry pier Koh Phangan waiting for the departure to neighbor island Koh Samui.

Why would anybody want to transport sand from one island to the other? Especially if the other island is a smaller one? Well … a couple of weeks ago there was this word on the street how landowners on Koh Pha-ngan could easily make some extra bugs. Just by selling some sand … earth …soil … from their property. Some friendly excavator will do some digging on their plot of land and load up the trucks with the soil. Earning money never made easier :-)

International School in Koh Phangan?

Read more   Posted by: Becki on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 05:13 PM
Facts & Stories As everything is always in a permanent flow and constantly changing it’s just up to you to open your eyes and discover new things around you every single day :-)

So I just discovered this new flyer a couple of days ago which is put up at many different places around Koh Phangan. And I thought it’s quite interesting that a group of concerned resident “farang” parents are trying to setup an international school here on this lovely island to fill Koh Phangan’s educational gap!

I think that this is really a great idea as the education you normally get here on Koh Phangan’s National Schools is far below zero compared to any western school. I mean some of the kids here still think that Europe is some sort of fruit you plant in the ground and probably can eat some years later. And I’m not joking this is something a 12 year old school kid told me a couple of years ago ;-)

And also the Thai Government doesn’t seem to be very interested to fill the nation wide educational gap. Instead the Thai Prime Minister Thaksin recently had the idea to buy 30% shares of the Liverpool football club probably to guide his National team to win the next world champion ship! But so far the Thai Government has dropped that deal.

Who knows? Amazing Thailand :-)

Local Thai Protests against International Airport on Koh Phangan!

Read more   Posted by: Becki on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 12:39 AM
Facts & Stories Since at least 3 years there has been going the rumor around on the island from time to time that the local authorities of the district office in Suratthani are planning to build an International Airport here on Koh Phangan Paradise Island!

Yes ... you heard perfectly right and the airport gossip seems to become more and more a reality! Recently our reporters found some protest signs from the local Thai community along the west coast between Wok Tum and Srithanu village. Unfortunately the 3 signs are only written in the Thai language but Phangan Island News has decided to publish the English translation :-)

One sign says "Rau Mai Au Sa-Naam Bin Thi Nii" and it just means "We don't want an airport here!” The other protest sign tells you "Thi Choo Ruea - Mai Chai Thi Choo Ruea Bin" and means "This is a port for boats and not for airplanes!”
